Ometepe Island Nicaragua

posted in: Nicaragua | 2

Island with 2 massive volcanoes in Lake Nicaragua. Literally out of this world.

One hour ferry ride trough the majestic Lago De Nicaragua and we set foot in the island to Backpack through the Island. This is an island formed by two volcanos – Volcán Concepción and Maderas in the Lake Nicaragua.

There are 2 ferry docs on this island, we arrived at the Moyogalpa doc. This is a quante little town with just over 9000 people. Many options to stay and eat. We stayed three nights in Hotel Ometepetl. We paid about $15/night. Hotel was clean, two minutes from the Ferry dock, we stayed an extra night!.

Places to visit in Ometepe

If you’re an avid hiker, you can hike two volcanos. They’re a wonder to behold. Few things we enjoyed; walking the wooded path leading to Playa Punta Jesus Maria, taking a chicken bus up to Playa Santo Domingo. In Santo Domingo we went on a beautiful hike, the forest is so dense and Howler monkeys are plenty, it is advisable to hire a guide if you are not familiar with the area. We did! You can also rent a bike and tour around the island. The buses to Santo Domingo are irregular, you need to make sure that you wont miss the last bus. (We did, and ended up waiting forever to catch 2 buses. One to a nearby town and then a bus to Mayogalpa.)

There are many places to eat and drink in Ometepe. We really liked the Burrito cart in the street. (Think the street name is Santa Ana). They made the best burritos. They are open till early AM and we had them around 2 am.

Ometepe is a glorious island. People are friendly, and we never felt threatened. We felt safe even when walking along the isolated wooden paths. There are beautiful birds, playful monkeys and friendly dogs co-habiting the space with Humans.
