Honduras the misunderstood land of wonders!

Last day in Honduras. The anticipation of getting to Guatemala is overclouded by the sadness to leave Honduras, the misunderstood land and her people. The country itself is a thing of beauty. Rolling hills, turquoise ocean, white sand beaches, waterfalls, animals. We only hear about Honduras’ drug wars. We hear about people trying to escape a country. We hear about gun violence.
In the middle of all this, there’s the beautiful, warm people who would welcome you with nothing but smiles & open arms, whom we seldom hear about. Amid all the chaos around them, Hondurans have found a way to smile, way to share their beautiful country with total strangers.

Their resilience opened my heart wide open. Whether I’m asking for directions, or getting something to eat, Hondurans offered nothing but kindness. From the moment we got our passports stamped to the moment we arrived in Copán Ruinas (our last destination in Honduras), people have been so very kind. The lady who rode next to me in the chicken bus up to Copán from La Guama hugged me at the end of the journey and wished me safe travels, the lady at homestay at Copán correct my very broken Spanish ever so patiently, two ladies who sat next to me in the bus bought me a bag of water to drink, the old guy whom I bought the chip bags from side of the road asked me to sit next to him to have a conversation; me – in very broken Spanish, him with great interest, amusement & patience.

The guns, drugs, and any other problem in the country don’t define these amazing people. These Hondurans are the heart of this beautiful country, they’re the story of Honduras, and that’s the only story I choose to believe in, the only story I choose to remember. Thank you very much for letting us visit your beautiful country!! Until we meet again!

Hasta Luego, mi gente!! Adios!

Long time supporter, and thought I’d drop a comment.

Your wordpress site is very sleek – hope you don’t mind me asking what theme you’re using?
(and don’t mind if I steal it? :P)

I just launched my site –also built in wordpress like yours– but the theme slows (!) the site down quite a bit.

In case you have a minute, you can find it by searching for “royal cbd” on Google (would appreciate any feedback) – it’s still in the works.

Keep up the good work– and hope you all take care of yourself
    during the coronavirus scare!

Hi Cheeko, Love reading your travel stories! Love your website, it looks great! Great stories, wonderful pictures.

I want to hear more about your motherland. I was reading a great book, SHANTARAM, which mostly takes place in Bombay. But in the sequel, THE MOUNTAIN SHADOW, the main character goes to Sri Lanka. These are amazing books about a man who escapes an Australian prison and hides out in a Bombay slum. Mostly a true story!

Also, I am looking forward to reading ISLAND OF 1000 MIRRORS about Sri Lanka by Nayomi Munaweera (2016). Have you read this book?

You are giving me that old travel bug again. As you know, I’ve been known to go wandering from time to time, but I have not left my bay area home for quite a while now. Oh well, it is very beautiful here in the shadow of Jerry’s mountain. I feel his spirit everywhere I go. Sometimes he wants me to put a backpack on. I hope we can do that together one day, my friend.

Much Love Cheeko and family. Safe travels. Sorry the corona virus is keeping you from your Brazilian adventure.
